As you might have read in the About section, after high school I attended a Higher School for Interpreters and Translator in Rome, where I had a chance to significantly improve my English and learn German.
During these three years I studied grammar, translation and interpretation techniques, as well as IT, Italian litterature and linguistics and Media Sociology.
As a final examination for my Bachelor, I was required to write a thesis on a topic of my choice -in Italian- and then translate it into my languages of study: English and German.
I started to think about the topic one year before my thesis defence and, obviously, I changed my mind a couple of times. In December 2011, three months before the Day, I finally decided the topic, even though I continued to change my mind in regard to the different aspects I wanted to analyse. A brifef explanation of the "deciding process" is described in the introduction of the thesis.
The subject I chose, in the end, is the relationship between the musical drama Across the Universe and its audience. The film was created with the aim of informing the youth of the 2000 about the main themes of the 60s in the USA and the way young people fought to change and improve the society they lived in.
Director and screenwriters chose to use music to fulfill their goal, because music is a funny medium and it is very effective, as it transmits to the viewers all emotions and feelings the main characters go through, without having them striving to understand them.
The music in question is that of the Beatles, which perfectly acts as a connection between the time the story is set at and the time it is presented to its audience.
The director wants to reach the whole world with her film and her message, however, her work is so full of references to the Beatles, that one could not appreciate the effectiveness of the soundtrack and the genius with which it was created, unless one is a real fan of the Band.
